Casual Clothes
Ladies, leave your heels at home! Cuba is very laid-back, so you’ll want the bulk of your clothing to be casual.
Keep in mind, it gets very hot and humid in Cuba, so plan to pack light-colored and flowy items that will help deflect the sun and keep you cool. For men, shorts and t-shirts are the way to go. For women, you can pack plenty of shorts and flowy tops or go for sundresses for an even easier approach.
Depending on when you go, it can get a tad chilly at night. Bring one or two light sweaters and you should be good to go.
Although Cuba as a whole is causal, you can find some upscale shows and restaurants. If this is something you’re interested in, consider packing some fancier clothes too.
Close-Toed Shoes
Comfortable, close-toed shoes are a must for everyone visiting Cuba. There are plenty of cultural and historical walking tours throughout the country, as well as amazing hiking spots.
Even if you skip the hiking and opt for a vintage car tour of Havana, you’ll still be doing quite a bit of walking around the city. The streets tend to get dusty, so you’ll want close-toed shoes to keep your feet clean.
Beach Gear

A bathing suit, light cover-up, flip-flops, sunglasses, and a beach towel are all a must. You may also want to consider packing a small, foldable tote bag that you can use as a beach bag during your trip.
Snorkel Gear
Why settle for just laying on the beach, when there’s a whole world to explore under the waves? Scuba diving and snorkeling are both popular activities in Cuba, and there are tons of great spots to check out.
While both snorkeling and diving equipment is available to rent, you can save money by bringing your own snorkel gear. A mask and snorkel are small enough to fit in your suitcase and you can use them for years to come.
If you are an avid snorkeler and have some extra room to spare, consider investing in a nice pair of fins too.
Plenty of Cash
While you may be used to going cashless and just swiping your card for everything at home, Cuba is different. The vast majority of businesses around the country are cash only, and ATMs can be hard to come by.
Instead, you’ll want to take out plenty of cash and exchange it as soon as you arrive. You’ll be able to do this at the airport and at certain resorts in Cuba. However, to get the best rate, try to exchange your money at a Cuban bank.
If you’re nervous about taking out so much cash, consider bringing a small bag to store your extra money. Bring only what you need for the day in your wallet and leave the rest locked in your suitcase.
Bug Spray and Sunscreen
It’s no secret that Cuba is hot. And where there’s tropical weather, there are mosquitos.
Make sure you bring plenty of bug spray and sunscreen to protect yourself on your stay. If you’re prone to sunburn, go with a higher SPF when choosing your sunscreen. You may also want to bring some sunburn relief just in case.
If you plan to be out and about, you may also want to bring some travel-sized containers of bug spray and sunscreen. This will allow you to reapply throughout the day without having to carry around giant canisters.
Floppy Hat
That sun is no joke! If you’re not used to tropical weather, your face and shoulders are likely the first things to get burned.
A big floppy hat can help shade these sensitive areas. Plus, it makes for one cute accessory, especially if paired with a nice sundress. For men, a baseball hat is a great alternative to keep the sun’s rays out of your face.
Stomach Medicine
Many foreign travelers should avoid drinking the tap water in Cuba. Keep in mind, this also means using bottled water to brush your teeth and avoiding ice cubes.
However, you’ll want to be prepared just in case. Stomach medicine, like Imodium, is always a good idea to pack. Not only can it save you from having to spend the entire day in the bathroom, but it’s good to have on hand, so you don’t have to run around to drug stores looking for it.
Toilet Paper
While your hotel should be stocked with toilet paper, not all public restrooms are. Be sure to bring some toilet paper and carry it with you.
The easiest way to do is by unraveling part of the roll, folding it up, and putting it in a plastic sandwich bag. You can then carry the sandwich bag in your backpack or purse, so you have it with you at all times. Just be sure to throw your used toilet paper in the garbage instead of flushing it.
