Traveling Essentials: What to Bring to Cuba

ZeroByteUncategorized

Are you planning a trip to “El Crocodilo,” the historically beautiful Caribbean island that is shaped like a crocodile?

Rich in culture and history, Cuba is a perfect destination for sandy beaches, delicious food, and adventure. It can be a romantic getaway for you and your loved one or a family vacation that your kids will never forget.

You can even bring a little bit of Cuba home with you. Americans who travel to Cuba are allowed to bring up to $100 worth of cigars and rum back home.

While you’re there, the possibilities are endless to what fun you can have. You could take a Havana and Hemingway tour and explore the home he lived in while he wrote “The Old Man and the Sea.” And while you’re there you can walk the charming, picturesque streets of Old Havana.

But once your trip is planned, you still have to pack. Keep reading so that we can help you prepare by telling you exactly what to bring to Cuba.

Start with the Essentials

First and foremost, remember to bring your PASSPORT. Even though it’s obvious, it’s still helpful to remind yourself 100 times because you won’t be able to board the plane without it.

You also need to acquire a TOURIST CARD, which will allow you to visit the country for up to 30 days. It has to be used within 180 days of issuance so don’t order it too early!

Get Your Cash Ready

You won’t be able to use your American credit or debit cards while you’re in Cuba. Make sure you take out lots of cash before your trip because you won’t be able to acquire any CUCs (Cuban Convertible Pesos) until you’ve landed in Cuba.

If you’re converting American dollars into CUCs, you’ll be charged a 10% fee. If you have the time, we suggest changing your American dollars into Euros BEFORE you leave for your trip. The exchange rate is better from Euros to CUCs so you’ll save money by doing so.

Another important thing to remember is to exchange any remaining CUCs at the end of your trip back into another form of currency. It’s prohibited to take any CUCs out of Cuba and if you wait until you get to the airport to perform your exchange, you risk the chance of having your CUCs confiscated.

Health Insurance

Cuba requires all visitors to have health insurance before entering into the country. If you don’t currently have a health plan, you can purchase travel insurance for your trip.

If you do have health insurance already, be sure to make sure you’ll be covered while you’re away.

Photocopy Your Essentials

In addition to your passport, social security card, birth certificates and any other ID you might be bringing on your trip, make sure you also bring photocopies of these same documents.

Having photocopies could save you time and trouble in the event of a loss of any of your originals.

While you’re at it, you might as well have photocopies of your insurance, itineraries for hotel and travel, and anything else that could help identify you or prove the legitimacy of your stay.

Make Packing a Positive Experience

Don’t just think about the suitcase that’s right for you and your trip. Also, think about the little things that can make your experience with that suitcase more enjoyable while you travel.

Purchasing a laundry bag for your dirty clothes so they don’t mix with the clean ones can make going in and out of your bag a much more enjoyable experience.

While you’re at it, buy a soft bag for your shoes so that whatever your soles are picking up, doesn’t end up on your underwear.

Think About Your Attire

As you’re checking off your Cuba packing list, don’t waste too much space bringing too many fancy clothes or shoes. Save some room for a good pair of close-toed walking shoes and some good walking sandals as well. If you plan to do a lot of exploring, you’ll want comfortable options.

A hat and sunglasses should go without saying, but we’re reminding you anyway! You’ll want that added protection from the sun when you’re cruising around in a classic car.

And if you’re planning on visiting Cuba’s white sandy beaches, make sure you bring a couple of swimsuits! A swimsuit is one of the most essential things to bring to Cuba.

Be Prepared to Stay Healthy

As you should with any trip, put hand sanitizer in your bag when you’re packing for Cuba.

Bring a small medical kit for peace of mind should you cut your foot on a seashell or incur any minor injury. Bring a set of small toiletries so that you aren’t wasting precious packing real estate on big bottles.

Unfortunately, Cuba still suffers from water pollution and filtered water can be limited and expensive. Save yourself time, money, and worry by bringing a filtered water bottle.

Sunscreen and bug spray should also be on your list in deciding what to pack for Cuba.

Last but Not Least

Don’t forget your chargers, cameras, and whatever other electronics you deem essential for your trip.

Extra tissues are always a plus as many public bathrooms in Cuba don’t provide any.

A scarf or a small sarong can be worn on a chilly night, to protect your hair when cruising with the top down, or as something to sit on at a park or on a sandy beach.
