If you’re looking for an interesting and educational experience while in Havana, Cuba, then make sure to visit the Havana Club Rum Museum. The Museum tells the story of how this rum brand has become the best-selling in the world, from its origins in 1934 to the present day. There you can learn about the different types of Havana Club rum, from aged whites to select rums. You’ll also be able to explore the unique blending process used to create the distinctive flavor of this brand.

A traditional rum from Cuba

Ron Havana Club has a rich history unlike any other. This unique brand is a mixture of parallel traditions from rum producers of more than four centuries. This Cuban rum is a reflection of the people and culture that surrounds it.

José Arechabala opened “La Vizcaya” in 1878 in Cardenas and grew to become one of Cuba’s most important companies. On March 19, 1934, a new factory was inaugurated, and a new product appeared: the famous Havana Club Rum. By 1950, the distillation plant alone had the capacity to produce 125,000 liters of rum per day.

After the triumph of the revolution in 1959, the Cuban government nationalized all businesses, including the Havana Club rum. Although production of this did not stop completely, the quantities decreased significantly. In 1993, the joint venture Havana Club Internacional S.A. emerged as a result of the merger between the Cuban company Cuba Ron S.A. and the French group Pernod Ricard, created for the entry of Havana Club into the international market.

Today, Ron Havana Club is the best-selling rum brand in the world. More and more countries are every day carrying their line of aged whites and the oldest select rums.

Types of Havana Club Rum:

• Añejo Blanco Rum

The youngest of the Aged Rums, with a delicate aroma and fruity flavor. For its power of permanence and at the same time soft to the palate it is a perfect mixer.

•Añejo Especial Rum

Rum doubly aged up to 5 years is perfect to create an authentic Cuba Libre. Its deep golden color, its special aroma, and its measured flavor do not go unnoticed.

• Añejo Rum 3 years

Havana Club Añejo Rum 3 years is the rum for Cuba’s most famous cocktail, the mojito. It is the transition between White and Dark rum. It stands out for being very aromatic, well balanced, and light amber color.

• Selection of Masters

Triple-aged barrel rum is the result of a unique elaboration process. It has a warm amber color, with an intense red glow.

• Añejo Reserva Rum

The perfect combination of strong flavor and smooth aroma. This rum is distinctively amber in color with subtle notes of vanilla and tobacco. It is drunk alone, although it is also enjoyed mixed or rocky.

• Añejo Rum 7 years

It is the flagship Rum, the first Cuban vintage that showed the world that rum can be drunk alone. To create it you need more than 14 years and the minimum age of any rum in the blend is 7 years. Identifiable by its strong amber color and brilliance.

• Añejo Rum 15 Years

It is a limited edition, rare and luxurious (only 58 barrels a year). Experts recommend enjoying it in the company of a cigar. Transparent and bright mahogany color, with aromas of dried fruits.

• Maximum Extra Aged Rum

Artisanal elaboration by mixing the best and oldest reserves of rum. It comes bottled in an elegant glass decanter, created by a master glassmaker.

• Union Rum

The first Cuban rum was created especially to accompany a Cuban cigar of the Cohiba brand. The intense amber color reflects a long process of natural aging.

Havana Club Rum Museum

A museum in Havana pays tribute to the city’s most iconic drink “The Havana Club Rum Museum”. It seeks to publicize the entire process and history of one of the classic brands of rum manufacturing and distribution around the world.

Located in the Historic Center of the capital, the establishment belongs to the Havana Club Foundation. There, it is displayed from an original distillery and its aging section to the rum tasting in a traditional bar of the 1930s. In addition, it offers the unique experience of creating your own rum, packaging it, labeling it, and personalizing the souvenir.

As an interesting fact, the World Travel Awards, also known as the Oscar of Tourism, have been pleased in 2022 to grant the Havana Club Rum Museum the distinction of Best Tourist Experience in a rum distillery.

The experience of visiting this museum is a journey through the history, tradition, and culture of Cuba. It allows us to understand, more deeply, why the brand has been so successful in its conquest of the world. Also, the place is suitable for all types of visitors who want to explore the deepest secrets hidden behind each bottle.

As they say in the Museum, there is shown the history from “the cane field to the palate”.
