In Cuba, authenticity is king. You won’t find any fast-food chains on this island. Check out this list of 10 Cuban desserts you must try.

1. Flan

Flan is a world-famous traditional Cuban dessert. It is a flat custard cake that is creamy and smooth and not overly sweet.

It is one of the most versatile of all Cuban recipes. Flan flavors are limitless. Popular options include guava, chocolate, and coconut.

The beauty of this Latin American dessert is that it is so simple. Yet, you will find flan on menus of upscale Cuban restaurants as well as in Grandmas’ kitchen.

Sometimes, flan is topped with almonds, citrus fruit, chocolate glaze and so on.

Flan is made out of sugar, an egg, several egg yolks, a can of both evaporated and sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract.

First, you brown the sugar in a saucepan. Then when it is dark brown and caramelized, you pour the sugar into a casserole dish.

Use a blender to combine the other ingredients for one minute. Next, pour the mixture over the caramelized sugar.

Place the dish inside a larger pan and add an inch of hot water to the outer pan. This will keep the edges from burning.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees until set (around 50 minutes).

Individual flan desserts are a fun variation of this dessert. Simply divide the batter into ramekin cups and bake until set.

If you aren’t a big fan of filling and decadent desserts, you’ll love flan. With its subtle flavors and light, airy texture, it’s a dessert that is easy to fall in love with.
