History of the Cohiba cigar

Cohiba’s story began when Fidel Castro realized that one of his bodyguards, named Bienvenido “Chicho” Pérez, was smoking a “very good and aromatic” cigar. When Castro asked him what brand that vitola was, the bodyguard replied that he received it from a friend.

The man in question was a cigar roller named Eduardo Rivera who worked at Havana’s La Corona factory.

The Habano was unique at the time because it was thin and long, while most cigars were thick. Fidel liked those cigars so much that he not only began to smoke them, but to give them to colleagues, dignitaries from other countries, and other personalities. So much so that the fame of tobacco, still unnamed, began to spread.

In order to twist cigars for his own consumption, Castro hired Rivera and put him with five other rollers to work in a former diplomatic villa on the outskirts of Havana called El Laguito.

In 1966, large-scale production of these tobaccos began. Celia Sánchez Manduley, the Cuban heroine of the Cuban revolution, then realized the need for it to have a name. After researching history, she baptized it with the one that tobacco was given by Cuban aborigines: Cohiba.

It was not until 1982 that its commercialization became public. Castro decided to turn his personal cigars into a luxury cigar brand for public consumption during the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Since then Cohiba’s fame has continued to grow, especially because it is the most emblematic brand of Habanos, and because the leaves used in its elaboration are “the selection of the selection” of five best Vegas of Pinar del Río.

Cohiba is the only brand of Habanos in which two out of three types of leaves used are fermented a third time in barrels. This unique process results in an aroma and flavor not found anywhere else.

Cohiba, what are the products on the market?

First, we told you how easy it can be a victim of scams with these cigars. We let you know all the correct names of the products of this company. So you can not make mistakes in your purchases.

There are 11 official cigar products on the market. However, there are many limited-edition cigars that people often search for. We do not list all of them, but we remind you that even in these special editions, the cigars still reference the names of the original ones we describe. But before proceeding any further, let us establish a small premise first.

Each Cuban cigar has a name and vitola, which is a name that identifies the dimensions of the cigar given by the producing factory. With this method of sorting, it has been possible to get rid of several fraudulent products that did not bring the correct weights and lengths of the factory name and give an indication of the type of cigar to fans.

Now that you also know this detail, but if you are an expert surely you already knew it, let’s know all the products that Cohiba sells, except for the limited editions:

Lanceros, here is the cigar most loved by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. Pride of the company that never wears, you have to smoke it at the right times. It´s the classic Cuban cigar for meditation. The vitola is Laguito n. 1, while the length is 192 mm and the diameter is 15.08 mm.

Behike, a very common Cuban cigar, among those who have made history in this company. There is no vitola, but the length is 20 centimeters for a diameter of about 15 mm. Thin and narrow for those who want a long pleasure to savor the classic aroma of Cohiba.
