But what are some things you shouldn’t miss? What are the best places to visit in Cuba? Keep reading to find out the top 9 places you should absolutely visit on your trip to Cuba.

1. Old Havana

Old Havana boasts a bohemian vibe that is rich in history. Spanish-colonial architecture line the streets of Old Havana and some of the newer renovations are reawakening the life of these old buildings, making it easier to feel as though you’re walking those streets 200 years into history.

While you’re there you can visit the house where Ernest Hemingway wrote some of his greatest works. Did you know that Cuba has an adult literacy rate of 99.75%, making it one of the most literate countries in the world?

Awake your own literary senses by visiting Hemingway’s abode and experiencing Old Havana on our “Havana and Hemingway” tour.

2. Peninsula de Zapata

If you’re a nature lover, a bird watcher, or a history buff, this peninsula has much to offer you. It’s home to one of the largest wetlands in the Caribbean and is the perfect place for divers to explore many underwater spots along the reef.

While you’re there you can also check out Playa Giron, home to the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion. There’s also a crocodile farm.

3. Castillo de San Pedro del Morro, Santiago de Cuba

This breathtaking destination is home to one of the most preserved Spanish fortresses from the 17th century.

Designed in 1587, it still took decades to build. The fortress sits atop a huge cliff and was originally intended to prevent pirate attacks. It was later used as a jail and then converted to a fortress. You can learn about history in the little museum and enjoy wonderful views of the bay.

4. Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes

Art lovers take note! This museum is home to a grand collection of Cuban and international artists.

The museum is an art in itself being clad in Italian marble and boasting a “Form, Space, and Light” sculpture that welcomes visitors at the front of the building.

There is both ancient and modern art in the two buildings that make up the museum and it includes sculptures, paintings, and prints. And it’s in Havana which is one of the best cities to visit in Cuba.

5. Varadero

Varadero is arguably the best place to vacation in Cuba because of it’s beautiful beaches and popular tourist attractions.

Aside from enjoying the beaches, there are many things to do in Varadero, like diving, fishing, skydiving, golf, and other day trips.

It’s definitely the place to go if you’re looking for an all-inclusive stay. If you’re more of a traveler who likes to stay amongst the locals, save Varadero for a beach day trip and tour.

6. Guardalavaca

Guardalavaca is located in the Holguin province. If you’re looking for a beach that’s a little more remote than Varadero, Guardalavaca is one of the most serene places to visit in Cuba.

The white-sand beaches here are swept with lush foliage and little tourism. Because of the scattered foliage, it’s easy to find a shady spot to post up for the entire day. Bring your snorkel and explore the myriad of wildlife all along the coral reef.

7. Viñales

Only a 3-hour drive west of Havana, Viñales is home to some of the most astonishing scenery in Cuba. The many shades of green are home to Cuba’s tobacco farming.

It’s here that you’ll find Cuba’s famous mogotes which are very unique structures. They are formed like a series of isolated hills with extremely steep sides. They are composed of limestone, marble, or dolomite. They are usually characterized by caves around them and at their basis which invites fascinating exploration.

Home to rock climbing, hiking, and cave touring, the dramatic landscape of Viñales is a must-see if you’re wondering where to go in Cuba.

8. Sierra Maestra

These mountains are rich in history, once being home to the base of Fidel Castro. A lot of the mountain range is virtually untrodden by tourists which makes it all that much more alluring.

You could hike the summit of Pico Turquino while you’re there, which is the highest peak in Cuba at 6,576 feet.

You can’t go wrong visiting these forested mountains as their majestic beauty rising up from the Caribbean sea creates a 360-degree picturesque view that is one of the best in Cuba.

9. Baracoa

Baracoa is Cuba’s oldest city, founded in 1511. It’s also surrounded by mountains covered in rainforest. The city can only be reached by a twisty mountain road. The town is known for Cuba’s premier chocolate production as cacao is grown locally here.

There’s plenty of hiking to do and visiting Baracoa will definitely give you that local feel.
