The area was the scene of conflicts at different times, it served as a refuge for the rebel troops under the direction of Che Guevara during the fight against Batista and it was the scene of the insurrection of Fidel Castro’s opponents.

This place is renowned for its mountain excursions, which are one of its most popular activities. The Sendero Vegas Grandes is the most popular hike among visitors to the area. It runs through coffee plantations for about two and a half kilometers, seeing traditional houses, and cliffs and finishing at Salto del Carbuní, a spectacular waterfall. The Gruta La Batata is a beautiful cave system in the area that is definitely worth exploring.

The road to get there is also very scenic, and you’ll be able to see some amazing flora and fauna along the way. Although the best is at the end, a cave in which there are different natural pools where you can bathe and enjoy the healing properties of these waters.

El Nicho is an enclave of the Parque Natural Topes de Collantes. Its name comes from a beautiful waterfall of crystalline waters that there is in the río Hanabanilla, Cuba.
The waterfall is approximately one kilometer away along the Reino de las Aguas, a scenic and nature trail. This area is abundant in plant and animal life, such as Cuban trogon and palmiches.
The hike to the waterfall is reasonably easy and takes about an hour. The views from the top are stunning, and swimming in the pool at the base of the waterfall is an unforgettable experience.
